This farmstead dates back to 1883, and the original house, two barns, and foundation from the original granary are still here and in use. Our next door neighbor grew up here and remembers haying with horses, raising livestock, and when his family first transitioned from horse power to tractor power. The large (formerly cow) barn is where CSA members come to pick up shares each week. The small (formerly horse) barn was full of old hay when we arrived in 2007, and we've slowly been emptying it, using the hay as mulch. The farm is located on Birch Point Road, off 641 (Lk. Leelanau Rd. or Bugai Rd.) in southern Leelanau County, just eight miles outside Traverse City, or seven by TART trail (which crosses the end of our road). The trail is a lovely bike ride from TC, paved and almost totally flat until you reach Birch Point Road itself. We’re thinking of lots of creative ways to encourage bicycling – like offering extras or discounts to members who pick up shares by bike. We’re open to suggestions- what would YOU like to carry home on your bike as a bonus?
Map to the farm (note: the "A" arrow on this aerial view googlemap is actually not at the farm! The farm is almost exactly halfway between 641 and the lake, with a black mailbox across from the driveway-- on this aerial view map, it appears as a long curved line of willows perpendicular to the road)
