Breaking News: Birch Point CSA wants to buy the farm!  We've been renting for the past three years, and now the landowners here are ready to sell.  The asking price is high, so we're trying to find a solution that works for everyone. Under consideration: a land contract. a conservation easement, a USDA new farmer loan, and alternately, finding a new owner/purchaser with whom to make a long-term lease.   Current project: making a long-term business plan with profit projections to help determine if the CSA can afford to pay for the farm to continue here.  As a member, you may be invited to participate in creative financing, for example, if enough members have the means, to buy a 5-year or 10-year membership, to provide the farm cash-in-hand for a downpayment.  THE CSA IS STILL ON FOR 2010- we definitely have this season, and possibly longer, to plan for the next step and the future.  Come join us as we create a sustainable model for the transfer of farmland to the next generation of farmers!

We want this CSA to be truly community supported, not just financially, but with bodies and brains, too.  While we do need money to operate and certainly won’t turn away members who just want to write a check and pick up a share each week, what we’d really love is for each member to make this farm an important part of their lives.  We’re not certified organic, not because we have anything against certification, but because we believe you yourselves are more accurate assessors than the government of what you consider to be conscientious, appropriate farming practices.  We hope and expect that you’ll ask questions, come visit, and take a personal interest in what goes on here.  We may adopt a core group model of member-based decision-making, eventually require participation in the form of farm or other work (e.g. mechanical, bookkeeping, legal, office, etc.), or simply ask a member to host a monthly potluck, to start!
