We got rained into the barn once again for the tasting of tomatoes. But we re-arranged and made room for all. Here are the results:

Sungold (scored all 5’s), a ringer brought in by Karen Durham, was judged by many to be so good that it should not even be in the competition (nothing else can really compare). We grow them, but these little cherries never make it back to the barn.

Rose (Ave score 4.46, range 3-5, mode 5) was best ‘regular’ slicing tomato, though some scored it only 3. This one always ranks high. Rose is the ‘rosey’ colored one that usually has a nice shape too.

Brandywine was also brought in from Karen’s garden. Often a top scorer in tomato tastings, this one averaged 4.3 (range 4-5, mode 4).

Purple Cherokee (ave score 3.8, range 4-5, mode 4). We were not too fond of the way this one behaved in the gardens, but it is one of our favorites for flavor.

Surprisingly, all of the rest of the tomatoes clustered around a score of 3 to 3.2. Glacier (3.2) is the little one that comes in early, and is usually near the top of the rankings. Peron Sprayless (3.1) is our favorite overall for good flavor, looks and performance and took top honors last year. The pretty orange Jubilee, tops in flavor a couple years ago, Blue beech (a better-than-average roma type) and Green Zebra (that odd looking green striped one) tied at 3.0.
