Meadowlark Farm CSA News - November 2, 2007

Dear community of hale and hearty winter shares,

As the winds blow and bluster, leaves falling all around, we embrace this shifting time of year as much as we can.  It is a time of change, of transition, of death and turning inward.  We prepare boxes of food for you with incredible gratitude. Our deep thanks to you who are the heart and soul of this community of eaters, you who appreciates the bounty and beauty of winter.  Your box includes many "rooty" vegetables with which to ground yourself and precious greens from the lifegiving hoophouse plus frost kissed kale from the fields.  It is the time of year for soups, stews and stick to your ribs good food that nurtures your body and soul.  Take time to take care of yourselves and your dear ones; your immune systems will thank you dearly!

Boxes today include: Nicola yellow potatoes,(like Yukon gold one of our new favorites),a little bag of Purple Peruvian fingerling potatoes, yellow and red onions, garlic, a big bag of sweet carrots, beets, celery root or celeriac, sunshine winter squash, delicata winter squash, a mixed bag of herbs including sage, rosemary and thyme plus green kale, lettuce and salad mix from the hoophouse.  Remember, it's NOT WASHED!!!  Delicious yes, tender yes, but not washed.

We are excited to pass along to you for the first time, some purple Peruvian fingerling potatoes.  About 5 years ago we had one plant's worth of these show up in another variety we'd planted in the field. They were so gorgeous, we vowed to save them and grow them out until we were able to have a good supply.  This year, we harvested 12 boxes from that original plant.  Amazing, isn't it?  Let us know what you think.

A reminder to all about the winter shares; the greens aren't washed.  We are all spoiled by the salad crew's hard work in the summer processing and washing our salad.  We have no facility to wash in the winter, so leave it to you. We find it best to take time to wash the greens right away and store them ready to eat in your fridge.  Fill a sink with cold water, swish the greens around and then spin in a salad spinner and store in a cleaned plastic bag.

Next winter shares will be Friday, November 16th.  We are happy to continue to work with Higher Grounds coffee, and they are gracious enough to offer you all a discount on coffee as a member of meadowlark csa.  Place an order!  jody@highergroundstrading.com

Also, the amish community has more turkey for sale.  If you'd like a fresh, free range turkey for thanksgiving, my dad is planning one more delivery the week of thanksgiving.  He'll bring turkeys into TC on Tuesday and Weds at the farm.  Call Earl for more details at 231-824-3536.  Have a great two weeks and take good care.  Love, the meadowlarks
