Meadowlark Farm CSA News - July 29, 2008
Click here to view full size picture Dear community of meadowlark,

So much for complaining about the sultriness of last week.....now we have cool temperatures, especially at night(did you remember that most plants grow at night?) so that we've seen a real slow down on ripening.  We expected there to be lots of beans this week, but were disheartened by the slim pickings.  We hope though, that you'll enjoy your rooty box of rainbow loveliness!  This week's box includes:  salad mix, garlic, sweet onions, shallots, yukon gold potatoes, a bunch of beets and rainbow carrots(in the same bag  plus your Italian parsely), zucchini,  cukes, red kale, savoy cabbage and for premiums the first of the beans, rainbow chard and more of all.  Fruit this week is raspberries and tart cherries from omena organics.

A note about the cherries; omena organics is the weaver family of omena and they offer the tart cherries this week.  They are open to orders both big and small, so give them a call if you'd like to freeze some cherries for the dead of winter or make an awesome cobbler....call jane weaver at 386-7466 for an order and details. We bought an amazing cherry pitter at Mary's Kitchen Port and for $20 you too could stock your freezer for cobbler or smoothies all year long. The pitter is so fast and fun and ella and eli pitted 32 quarts of cherries in a couple of hours!

Also, if you'd like to place an order for either amish chicken or from chris and heather bardenhagen, there will be a convergence of both of these farms here at meadowlark on Friday august 8th.  There are summer turkeys and chicken available from the amish, and chicken from the bardenhagens.  Call the Amish at 231-824-9574 or the Bardenhagens at 271-3444

We are happy to have the A-Z cookbooks back again, so if you'd like some suggestions for how to handle your box of veggies, consider the investment of $15 for a great resource.  Just email jenny at meadowlarks4@yahoo.com to reserve a copy and we'll include one in your box.  Here's a recipe to try:

CABBAGE AND ROOTY SALAD WITH TAHINI DRESSING

--2 c. any combo of grated beets and carrots -2 c. any combo of kohlrabi, cabbage, turnip, fennel

-1 ½ c. chopped kale and parsley                    -1 medium sweet onion, finely chopped

-1 c. sprouts(optional)  Toss veggies together and lightly dress with this dressing

*****creamy tahini  dressing:  tahini is sesame butter and is delicious and nutritious and can be found at oryana in bulk or in a jar

-3 TBL sesame seeds                  -1/2 c. tahini                   -1/4 c. lemon juice           -1/4 c. sesame oil

-1/4 c. safflower oil                  -1/4 c. tamari        -1 tsp dried dill               -1/4 c. water

Toast sesame seeds on a dry skillet, tossing often.  Cool and mix with remaining indredients and ¼ c. water.  Makes 1 ½ c.

Have a great week, don't forget to return those boxes and for future reference, all Higher Grounds coffee must be picked up at the roastery.  You'll still receive the generous CSA discount!  Love, the meadowlarks
