Meadowlark Farm CSA News - August 15, 2008
Evening in the Quetico [Click here to view full size picture]  Dear community of meadowlark,

The week is a bit hectic around the farm as most of the tutlis/watts farm family(jon, ella, eli and the extended watts family)are off on a Canadian camping extravaganza.  It is a watts family tradition to backcountry camp and canoe in the Quetico Provincial Park(north of the Boundary Waters) and this year, the entire watts clan converges for a 8 day trip.  Jon's brother Dave flies in from Oregon and his sister Sarah and her kids drive up from Grand Rapids.  They head out tomorrow morning for their grand adventure!  For CJ, the youngest grand child, this will be his first backcountry camping experience.  For Price Watts, this is year 55 traveling to the Quetico.  As a young teen he started as a guide, and fell in love with the rugged beauty of the area.  He introduced his lovely young wife to it, and then their 3 kids spent almost every summer there.  55 years later the grandkids join in and the sweet tradition lives on!  So it is a treasured experience that the watts clan embarks on, full of wilderness, fishing, Canadian clear waters and lots of paddling.

More cold nights have slowed us down on ripening again, but we are happy to pass along tomatoes for all.  I must admit, I did pick a melon this weekend thinking maybe it was ripe.  It was close, but not quite.  Know though, in the not so distant future melons will make your box heavy indeed.  Boxes today include: salad mix, green kale, sweet onion, leeks, garlic, carrots and beets together in a bag, green beans, broccoli, green pepper, zucchini, cukes, cilantro and tomatoes.  Premium shares receive cherry tomatoes and a little fresh salsa pack of tomatillos a jalapeno and cilantro, cauliflower and extras.  Fruit shares receive a whopping 2 quarts of Richard Allen's plums.

We've sold out of the A-Z cookbooks again(that's the third time) and they are on order, so if you've contacted me wanting one, I have you on a wait list.  They'll be here in time for the next shares.  It is a great resource. Upon seeing the cookbook Liz Messing says, "I really believed I didn't need another cookbook until I saw this in the flesh.  It's amazing!" You can still place an order at meadowlarks4@yahoo.com

We are running late today, so no recipe formal recipe.  Try dicing some fresh tomato, green pepper, sweet onion, garlic, fresh lime juice, salt and cilantro for your very own fresh salsa. Please return your boxes and have great veggie adventures this week.  Love, the meadowlarks
