MEADOWLARK FARM SUMMER CSA NEWS

                                                                                                6-26-09

Dear friends,

As the temperatures hangs around 90 degrees this week, we begin to see the boxes filling with more than just greens.  The broccoli is beautiful, prolific and happening so there is a lot in your box today.  The sugar snap peas are juuuuuuust starting, so premium shares and select sites will receive some.  Next share will have lots and lots, even if you are an every other week share.  The beginnings of basil are topped and peony bouquets for flower shares.  Strawberries for fruit, so eat up and don't let them sit around, they are so fragile and picked today.  Boxes today include:  triple rinsed salad mix, garlic scapes, scallions, collard greens, hakkurei white turnips, broccoli galore, a head of romaine lettuce, a bag of basil tops and for premium shares a bunch of the first beautiful little rainbow carrots, rainbow chard, sugar snap peas and an extra head of lettuce and extra broccoli.  Nancy made such a delicious and simple salad today that included raw grated kohlrabi, grated turnips, slivered collard greens and just a touch of vinegar and salt.  It was so simple and delicious and beautiful and a great idea for using up any kohlrabi that may still be in your crisper.....

We are excited to provide yet another connection to what's happening on the farm, with your food and with the folk who are growing your food in the form of Nancy Allen's farm blog.  Go to:  farmfoodleelanau.blogspot.com and check out Nancy's thoughts, experience each week cooking for and with the farm crew and also many, many helpful and delicious ideas for using your veggies.  What the heck do I do with all of these garlic scapes?  Go to Nancy's blog for ideas that will make you wonder what you did before garlic scapes were in your daily life!  Today Ella and Nancy made a feast that fed our minds, bodies and souls.  To sit down on a busy, bustling day of harvesting, washing and packing and eat a meal together under the maple trees is an idyllic and lovely way for all of us to take a break and enjoy conversation together.  When we are well fed and happy, the work we do in bringing together your box is infused with good energy and love.  We hope that you can feel all of it....

A reminder that you can still get in on the honey order by calling Greg Griswold at 231-651-0682 or by sending in your order form.  Remember, it was in your box last time?  Support the bees that are working so hard to pollinate your fruits and veggies.  They(the bees that is) have been busy in the raspberries that are flowering this week.  We hope to have delicious berries to come thanks to those little ladies' hard work!

                                                SPANISH GREENS

-2 TBL olive oil           -3 garlic snakes or scapes                -1 lb or 1 bunch collard greens(try kale too)

-salt and pepper to taste                                                     -1/4 c. golden raisins

-3 TBL toasted pine nuts

First get a big stock pot full of water(as if you were cooking a package of pasta) and bring it to a rolling boil.  While the pot comes to a boil, take your washed collards, stack them on top of each other flat wise and then roll them together.  Slice across the roll and then into smaller strips(this is the chiffonade technique and works well with all greens and basil too).  When water boils, drop in greens(I put them into a colander which is easy to lift out when they are done) and let parboil for 4 minutes until bright green.  Rinse under cold water to stop the cooking.  Heat olive oil in sautee pan over medium heat and add garlic until brown and pine nuts to toast, then raisins until they plump.  Add greens and salt and pepper and cook until blended.

********PLEASE NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If you are an every other week share, this especially applies to you.  We will move our harvest and distribution date in two weeks.  We will have boxes available for you on Thursday, july 9th instead of Friday, july 10th.  We will be traveling to Virginia for a memorial service for a dear friend that weekend.  Yes, we are driving to Virginia for the weekend.  We hope that this won't inconvenience anyone too much.  We will have to boxes ready at the same times, same places, just one day earlier and for one week only.  Mark your calendar and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your understanding.  Love, the meadowlarks
